Costa Rican Sloth Conservation

The DWA has been in partnership with Aviarios del Caribe Sloth Refuge and Rehabilitation Center since 2002. The 136-acre reserve is located in the Estrella River Delta on the south Caribbean coast near Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. Named as one of Costa Rica’s Privately-owned Nature Reserves, the Sloth Sanctuary/Rescue Center opened in 1992, when owner, Judy Arroyo took in an injured Three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) — little did she know this was the beginning of a new career. The long-term goal of the center is the rehabilitation of abandoned and injured sloths (both Three-toed and Two-toed sloths, Choloepus hoffmanni), in order to return them to the wild (if determined to be releasable). It is also an important center for research of these little-understood creatures. Over the years, the DWA has provided computers, supplies (medical and dietary), architectural plans for the medical facility known as Slothpital and equipment for the animal commissary. Staff from the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica and DWA is provided training at both facilities, allowing the DWA to learn about the animals in their natural environment and SSCR staff to periodically check on the sloths at the DWA.
