Celebrating the First International Sawfish Day

| October 9, 2017

The Inaugural International Sawfish Day, highlighted in the last issue of EcoCurrents, will soon be upon us!

Following many months of presentations around the world and lots of coordination with public aquariums, researchers and field conservation folks, The Dallas World Aquarium will host an International Sawfish Celebration here at DWA from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 17, 2017.

DWA is partnering with a local Middle School in Flower Mound, Texas to plan a very special day for our visitors highlighting endangered Sawfish and the need for awareness of their conservation.

Paula Carlson, DWA’s Director of Husbandry, was invited by McKamy Middle School Science teacher Kay Walder, to visit and present information to McKamy Middle School’s GT Science students about Sawfish, their natural habitat and the threats that they face. Many great ideas resulted from the students and plans began to utilize their help in planning and implementing the International Sawfish Day celebration at DWA.

Among the many student-driven ideas was the development and selection of a Sawfish mascot, named Savvy and design of t-shirts as well as ideas for creating awareness about Sawfish with creative signage and artwork at DWA during the International Sawfish Day celebration.

The Dallas World Aquarium will continue to work with McKamy Middle School GT Science students this year on some other exciting Sawfish related projects. We appreciate the opportunity to work with such enthusiastic students and look forward to what the future holds for Sawfish conservation from the minds of our local youth.
