Located on the Atlantic coast of Panama, Zoologico del Istmo is an ideal tropical setting for birds. The DWA has been exchanging knowledge and technology with this institution for several years. In 2007, the DWA assisted in the design of and support for the construction of three free-flight aviaries, resulting in many first-hatchings at the facility. The DWA has a collaboration agreement with Zoologico del Istmo, validated by ANAM, Panama's environment authority, to work with Raptors, Cotingas and Xenarthas (edentates), in order to better understand their husbandry and ex situ conservation.
