Book Of The Month

SEA HORSE, RUN! by Tammy Carter Bronson, centers around rumors of an approaching sea dragon which causes much fright to sea creatures on the reef. Written “for anyone willing to find courage in the face of adversity,” the main character is Sea Horse. Sea Horse is the only sea animal that can hear the song of Coral. Sharks, moray eels, and an octopus all hurry by, warning that a sea dragon is coming and he can chomp sharks and whales into bits. With each warning, Coral advises “Sea Horse, run far, far away.” But Sea Horse refuses to leave Coral, even though Octopus said that the sea dragon would crunch Coral. Sea Horse saw Seaweed drifting by and offered to help him hide from the dreaded dragon. Much to his surprise, Sea Horse soon realized that the floating seaweed was actually a relative of his, the Leafy sea dragon! After introducing the Weedy and Ribbon dragons, the author illustrates and explains the classification and life cycle of a Sea Horse. The setting for this story is an Australian coral reef, which is depicted and discussed at the end of the book. A map showing worldwide coral reef distribution is also included.

Ms. Bronson, author and illustrator of several picture books, lives in Fayetteville, AR. This book was awarded the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Children’s Picture Book category.
