Letter From the Director

Dear Members,

The year 2006 provided us with opportunities to share ideas and information with many participants in various projects and organizations at both the national and international level.

We are encouraged about the transfer and future release of our juvenile Orinoco crocodiles. DWA staff member, Luis Sigler, recently participated in the III Workkshop for the Conservation of the Orinoco Crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) of which the DWA was a co-sponsor.

A long anticipated exhibit is now a reality. The Owl monkey habitat adds to the second level rainforest bridge where members of the family can be seen peering out their nest box.

Although off exhibit at the present time, we are excited to have the only "Ribbon seadragons" in a public facility. Starting with two females and one male, the male ribbon can certainly compete with the best of "moms".

Aerial WalkwayIf you have been to the aquarium recently, you may have noticed the new aerial walkway that now connects the "yellow" building to the main building. This allows for a more enjoyable and safe access to the entire facility.

All members are invited to a lecture to be held in the Endangered Species Gallery on Sunday, March 18th . Guest speaker will be Dr. Luis A. Mazariegos Hurtado, founder of The Hummingbird Conservancy, whose mission is the conservation of neotropical hummingbirds through the integration of research, education and active participation of the community in the establishment of natural reserves. He will be discussing hummingbirds and the role of the Hummingbird Conservancy. An internationally acclaimed photographer, his photographs were recently featured in the January 2007 issue of National Geographic. His book "Hummingbirds of Colombia" has been a valuable resource at the aquarium for many years. Please open the "Hummingbirds and the Role of the Hummingbird Conservancy" section for details if planning to attend. The first session will begin at 2:00, with later sessions added if needed.

The Education Department will soon be accepting applications for the Summer Junior Volunteer Program. If interested, please call the Education Office or e-mail info@dwazoo.com after April 2nd for specific requirements and details of the program.

Thank you for your continued support of The Dallas World Aquarium and we hope to see you March 18th.

Sincerely,
Daryl Richardson
Director
