Dear Members,
Spring cleaning and renovating continues into the summer. Most recently completed is the second floor aquarium (Port Hole) new from ceiling to floor and considerably larger in useable space. The theater (Tribal Gallery) was renovated late last year, also providing more space by relocating the freshwater exhibit back into the wall. The lower River exhibit area has also been refurbished and ready for guests to enjoy the sights of the underwater freshwater animals.
New residents in the Mundo Maya Cenote are quite obvious and add to the excitement in the exhibit. The Sawfish can often be seen resting on top of the tunnel as the Eagle rays swim amongst large groupers that are somewhat less obvious but can be found in the edges of deeper water. The Yapok or water opossum will soon be residing in his new home (formerly the Serpent’s Den). Madagascar, our outdoor seasonal exhibit, is open and filled with geckos, chameleons, frogs and turtles and fish from the world's largest island.
In April, The Dallas World Aquarium hosted the first ever Seadragon Husbandry Symposium. More than 40 participants (representing 20 AZA institutions and including several international participants) attended the three day event, and shared seadragon husbandry information through presentations and discussions. Pang Quong, of PQ Aquatics in Australia and Dr. Mike Garner of Northwest Zoopath in Washington were featured speakers.
I recently visited Iquitos, Peru where we are supporting local biologists in caring for orphaned baby manatees. I was joined by Dr. Murphy (Veterinarian at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, FL), Dr. Rodrigo Pinho Lopez (Veterinarian at Sao Paulo Zoo) and Tony Mignucci (Director of the Puerto Rico Manatee Center) to assess the animals first-hand. While there, we also worked with the Amazon Animal Orphanage/Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm that is owned by Gudrun Sperrer and Roblar Moreno.
February 29th was enjoyed by DWA guests, as well as staff members, with the kick-off of The Year of the Frog. The amphibian station was also presented on Earth Day (April 22), Migratory Bird Day (May 10) and will periodically appear throughout 2008. Eight hundred Sawtooth oak seedlings were distributed to DWA guests on Earth Day, with written instructions for planting. Be sure to stop by on World Ocean Day (June 8) and see what’s happening!
Sincerely,
Daryl Richardson
