Earth Day 2015 Manatee Release

| April 30, 2015

In February 2008, The Dallas World Aquarium was contacted requesting assistance with four orphaned Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis) in Iquitos, Peru. On Earth Day (April 22) 2011, the first of those rescued, and fully rehabilitated manatees were released into protected natural areas.

As of Earth Day this year, 15 of the endangered manatees have been successfully released back in to the wild, with researchers tracking their activities using radio transmitters.
The Dallas World Aquarium provides medical supplies and equipment, consultation, and funding for the program, which employs 15 full-time employees dedicated to the education about and welfare of this threatened species.
