The Temple of the Jaguar depicts the reverence and fear by the Maya for the Jaguar that symbolized courage and strength in their culture.
The Jaguar and Ocelot alternate in the three-story exhibit which provides fresh air, access to water and climbing space for these endangered cats.
The House of Zotz displays nocturnal animals such as Short-tailed leaf nose bats. Bats were associated with death, darkness and sacrifice by the Maya.
The nocturnal Water opossum (or Yapok) shares its exhibit with turtles and fish. This aquatic marsupial protects its young while swimming by using a ring of strong muscles to waterproof the pouch.
Desert cottontails scurry in and out of hollow logs as they share they display with species of birds. Like the cottontail, the Red-rumped agouti is closely watched by birds overhead that share his exhibit.
