Invertebrates
Mesmerizing Moon jellyfish float idly throughout the Palau exhibit as their hair-like stinging tentacles gather food. Numerous species of soft coral such as leather, cabbage and finger provide hiding places for many of the animals in the Solomon Islands display. Gigas clams, largest of the giant clams, can be seen throughout the exhibit. Hammer, bubble and brain corals live in the active Fiji exhibit with various clams such as the giant Squamosa. The Derasa, another giant clam species, can be seen in the New Guinea display. Usually sitting center-stage in its cave, the Giant Pacific octopus is surrounded by colorful anemones, urchins and sea stars in the fascinating British Columbia exhibit. Fish in Sri Lanka can be seen among numerous mushroom anemones, bubble polyps and lettuce corals. Indonesia highlights corals such as sun, staghorn and sawtooth. The bright red hues of the Blood shrimp are quite eye-catching. Cuttlefish, a cousin of the octopus, may almost be invisible as the master of camouflage blends into its surroundings in the Japan display.
